ASSOCIATE SERVICES

AIA AMARILLO WORKS TO ASSIST OUR ASSOCIATE AIA MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE WITH THEIR JOURNEY TO LICENSURE THROUGH A NUMBER OF SERVICES

THE PATH TO LICENSURE

AIA Amarillo works with you to make your dream of being a licensed architect in the state of Texas a reality!

EDUCATION

The state of Texas requires new licensure candidates hold a professional architecture degree from a NAAB or CACB accredited university. In Texas the NAAB accredited university College of Architecture programs are:
  • Prairie View A&M University
  • Rice University
  • Texas A&M University
  • Texas Tech University
  • University of Houston
  • University of Texas at Arlington
  • University of Texas at Austin
  • University of Texas at San Antonio
Alternatively, a degree from a foreign university (other than those accredited thru Canada's CACB) can be evaluated through NAAB's EESA  program.

EXPERIENCE

Architects-in-Training have to complete a number of hours of PAID work under the supervision of practicing architect. Hours are recorded through the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards' (NCARB) Architectural Experience Program (AXP). These required 3,740 hours are broken down into 6 sections:
  • Practice Managment: 160 Hrs
  • Project Management: 360 Hrs
  • Programming & Analysis: 260 Hrs
  • Project Planning & Design: 1,080 Hrs
  • Project Development & Documentation: 1,520 Hrs
  • Construction & Evaluation: 360 Hrs

The application fee to join NCARB is $100.
The annual renewal fee for your NCARB Record is $85 annually.

EXAMINATION

New Architects to be licensed in the state of Texas need to have passed all 6 sections of the Architect Registration Exams (AREs). These sections are:
  • Practice Managment
  • Project Management
  • Programming & Analysis
  • Project Planning & Design
  • Project Development & Documentation
  • Construction & Evaluation
To begin the process, you wll need to "Request Exam Eligibility," in your NCARB record. The cost of each of the 6 exams is $235. Once you register for the exams, the exams must be finished within 5 years from the time of the first exam, or you will have to retake all of the exams. Exams can be retaken (for the same fee) as many times as needed within the 5 year period.

LICENSURE

Once you have a professional degree, have completed your AXP hours, and passed all sections of the AREs, you will be able to register with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE).

AIA Amarillo also has several resources available for associate AIA members to utilize that have been made available from members' personal libraries. Please review the available resources on the Architecture Development Library page!
As an Associate member of AIA Amarillo, you also have access to AIA National's ARE Prep Resource: Archiprep. This service is a monthly subscription that provides study items for all ARE Sections, flash cards, practice exams, and more!

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE ARE'S

The Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE) provide financial assistance to ALL architectural interns in the state of Texas that are in the process of taking the Architecture Registration Exams. To qualify for the one-time $500 award called the Architect Registration Examination Financial Assistance Fund (AREFAF) you must have:
  • Been a Texas resident for the last 18 months
  • Attained a passing score on sections of the ARE with a combined fee totaling AT LEAST $500
  • An annual income LESS than $65,000.
If you have completed ALL portions of the ARE, the last section MUST have been completed in the 12-month period immediately preceding the date of the application. If you believe this applies to you, please complete the AREFAF form and send to the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.

​FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE TxA CONVENTION

To promote architectural dialogue amongst architectural associates at a state level, the Amarillo Chapter of AIA will be offering up to $500 dollar reimbursement to one of our members who is interested in going to the TxA Convention in El Paso on October 27-28, 2022. This money can be used for the cost of the convention, lodging, food, or the cost of tours. It may not be used for alcohol. This one-time gift will be provided after the convention, and you will be required to provide receipts of all costs that you would like to claim on this one time gift of up to $500. We will have a drawing at the May 5 Spring General Meeting for the recipient of the funds.

If you are interested, please send me an email saying thus by May 4th, 2022 @ 12:00 pm. Your name will be put in a hat for the drawing. If, for whatever reason, you get picked and are unable to attend the TxA Convention this year, let me know, and we will draw again. Let me know if you have any questions. PUT YOUR NAME IN THE HAT!!!
